  Antistatic Polymer for PS: Properties, Processing and Classification

An antistatic polymer for PS is an antistatic agent used specifically for polystyrene resins. It is added to the resin during the production of polystyrene plastics so that it disperses evenly inside the plastic. This article reviews the performance characteristics and processing notes of the 600K, 600C and 620K grades, and explains the three classes of antistatic polymers for plastics.

## 1. What Is an Antistatic Polymer for PS?

An antistatic polymer for PS is an antistatic agent specifically used for polystyrene (PS) resins. It is added to the resin during the production of polystyrene plastics so that it is evenly dispersed inside the plastic. The polymer delivers a lasting antistatic effect, but when added at 25% it may have a certain impact on the physical properties of the plastic.

## 2. PS Antistatic Polymer Grades and Properties: 600K, 600C and 620K

| Grade | Type | Substrate / Application | Key Features |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| 600K | Antistatic polymer | HIPS resin | Will not migrate on the end product or cause substrate atomization |
| 600C | Antistatic polymer | Low-humidity environments | Maintains antistatic effect at extremely low humidity; takes effect immediately after addition |
| 620K | Antistatic masterbatch | PS extruded sheets and thermoforming films | Good thermal stability and chemical resistance; retains antistatic properties after recycling |

### 600K: For HIPS Resin

600K is an antistatic polymer designed for HIPS resin. Unlike chemical antistatic additives, it will not migrate on the end product or cause substrate atomization (haze).

### 600C: Effective in Extremely Low Humidity

600C still maintains an antistatic effect in extremely low humidity environments, unlike chemical additives that need higher humidity to work. It takes effect immediately after being added to the polymer, unlike chemical additives that need a certain amount of time and humidity to develop antistatic properties.

### 620K: Antistatic Masterbatch for PS Extruded Sheets and Thermoforming Films

620K is an antistatic masterbatch based on the antistatic polymer for PS and is used for PS extruded sheets and thermoforming films. It offers thermal stability and good chemical resistance, and still has antistatic properties after recycling.

## 3. Processing Notes for PS Antistatic Polymers

An antistatic polymer for PS can be processed on a conventional extrusion machine, typically under low shear conditions. Actual processing temperatures should be adapted to the nature of the equipment and the manufactured article to achieve optimal quality.

## 4. Three Classes of Antistatic Polymers for Plastics

### Polyolefin Antistatic Polymer

This antistatic polymer has unique molecular configurations and structural properties. It is recommended for polyolefin resins such as polyethylene (PE) and polypropylene (PP), for producing antistatic packaging films, building materials, wires and cables, and more.

Polyolefin antistatic polymer has good compatibility with polyolefins. It effectively absorbs static charge from the surrounding environment and releases it to eliminate static electricity. It also offers high thermal stability and is not prone to causing plastic aging.

### Polyester Antistatic Polymer

The polyester antistatic polymer is an antistatic agent with polyester as the soft segment and polyamide as the hard segment. Its distinguishing feature is that the antistatic agent is permanent and non-migrating, which effectively reduces static accumulation.

This antistatic polymer has strong adhesion to materials such as polyurethane, epoxy resin and coatings, delivering a good antistatic effect. The dosage is usually 8%~20%, which effectively reduces the surface resistance of the product to 10E7 Ω/sq–10E9 Ω/sq. In addition, the antistatic polymer has good water-washing resistance.

### Long-Carbon Polyamide Antistatic Polymer

This antistatic polymer is based on a long-carbon polyetheramide elastomer (TPAE) and is produced by melt extrusion with the addition of different types of alkali metal sodium salts and lithium salts.

Studies have shown that when the mass fraction of lithium perchlorate (LiClO4) is 6%, the antistatic agent is evenly distributed in the TPAE, the antistatic effect is good, the surface resistivity reaches 10E7 Ω/sq, and the elongation at break is above 600%. Antistatic compounds containing long-carbon polyamides therefore have outstanding mechanical properties and are suitable for applications with high mechanical requirements.

## 5. Difference from Chemical Antistatic Additives

Conventional chemical antistatic additives generally rely on absorbing ambient moisture to form a conductive path, which brings several limitations: they need time and a certain humidity level to work, they tend to migrate to the product surface, and they may cause substrate atomization. Antistatic polymers achieve their effect through their own structure instead. The differences are mainly:

·         **Migration**: no migration and no blooming on the end product surface (e.g. 600K);

·         **Speed of action**: takes effect immediately after addition to the polymer (e.g. 600C);

·         **Humidity dependence**: maintains antistatic performance in extremely low humidity (e.g. 600C);

· **Recyclability**: retains antistatic properties after recycling (e.g. 620K).

## 6. PS Antistatic Polymer FAQ

**Q1: What happens if the dosage is too high?**

The antistatic polymer delivers a lasting antistatic effect, but when added at 25% it may have a certain impact on the physical properties of the plastic. The dosage should therefore be confirmed against the requirements of the finished product.

**Q2: What should be noted during processing?**

It can be processed on a conventional extrusion machine, typically under low shear conditions. Actual processing temperatures should be adapted to the nature of the equipment and the manufactured article to achieve optimal quality.

**Q3: How do I choose between 600K, 600C and 620K?**

Choose 600K for HIPS resin where non-migration and no substrate haze are required; choose 600C where low-humidity performance and immediate action matter; and choose 620K for PS extruded sheets and thermoforming films where thermal stability, chemical resistance and recyclability are priorities.

**Q4: How does an antistatic polymer differ from conventional chemical antistatic additives?**

Chemical additives generally need to absorb ambient moisture to form a conductive path and often require time and humidity to work. Antistatic polymers do not migrate or cause substrate atomization, maintain their effect at extremely low humidity, take effect immediately after addition, and retain antistatic properties after recycling.

**Q5: What are the classes of antistatic polymers for plastics?**

There are three main classes: polyolefin antistatic polymers, polyester antistatic polymers and long-carbon polyamide antistatic polymers.

**Q6: What level of surface resistance can be achieved?**

Polyester antistatic polymers are usually added at 8%~20% and reduce surface resistance to 10E7 Ω/sq–10E9 Ω/sq. Long-carbon polyamide types reach a surface resistivity of 10E7 Ω/sq when the LiClO4 mass fraction is 6%.

**Q7: Is there a grade with water-washing resistance?**

Yes. Polyester antistatic polymers offer good water-washing resistance.

## Conclusion: How to Select an Antistatic Polymer for PS

The core advantages of antistatic polymers for PS are non-migration, immediate action, usability at low humidity, and retained antistatic performance after recycling. Selection comes down to three points: first, match the grade to the substrate and product form — 600K for HIPS resin, 620K for PS extruded sheets and thermoforming films, and 600C for low-humidity conditions; second, confirm the processing conditions, typically low-shear extrusion with temperatures adjusted on the actual equipment; and third, for other substrates, refer to the three classes of antistatic polymers for plastics to match the base resin.
